Heel pain has many causes, but they share one thing — the heel takes the first and hardest hit of every step, and most shoes are not built to cushion it.
A flat, thin sole on a hard floor passes the impact straight through.
These shoes are selected for a cushioned heel, a slightly raised heel where appropriate, and a closed back that stops the foot sliding. None of that is a medical claim — it is the ordinary construction detail that decides whether the first step of the day lands softly or hard.
Footwear can reduce the impact that aggravates heel pain, but it does not treat the cause. Persistent heel pain is worth having looked at — see a podiatrist or your GP if it has lasted more than a few weeks, is getting worse, or you have pain at night.
Not necessarily. A slight elevation eases strain on some causes of heel pain; a high, unstable heel makes others worse. Choose a low, cushioned, stable heel.
Something with a closed back and a cushioned heel — a slipper is the wrong tool because the heel is unsupported while you walk to the kettle. Our Chaussons with a contoured footbed work better indoors than a flat pair.
If the pain is persistent, getting worse, or you have reduced sensation in your feet, please see a podiatrist or your doctor. Footwear is one part of everyday foot comfort — it is not a treatment.
